Carp reels

For a carp reel, check line capacity, drag and the retrieve per handle turn. Large-diameter spools accommodate thicker line and support long-range casting; less capacity may be enough when fishing close in or placing rigs from a boat. A progressive front drag controls line release during the fight, while free-spool reels provide a second adjustment for the waiting period.

The reel weight should balance the rod. Also check the line clips, spare spool, gear ratio and the supported line diameter. Compare capacity in metres and millimetres: two spools sold under the same nominal size can hold different amounts of line.
