Unhooking mats and carp cradles

An unhooking mat keeps a fish away from stones, soil and rough surfaces while the hook is removed. Choose length and width for the fish in the venue and check padding, side height, drainage and stated load. Raised cradles reduce the need to bend down; folding mats take less room in transport.

Wet the surface before placing the fish and have the landing net, unhooking tool and water ready. Keep the carp wet, protect its eyes and fins and minimise time out of the water. If the cradle has a cover or straps, use them only to control movement during handling; never leave the fish unattended.
